What Are Expansion Screws?

An expansion screw is a commonly used fastening device to secure objects to concrete, brick walls, or other hard substrates. In Taiwan, we typically refer to it as a "wall plug" or "gecko plug." It is also known as a "ramie root plug," because before plastic and metal processing became widespread, people used tougher ramie roots to make expansion screws.

Types of Expansion Screws

How Do They Work?

The principle of an expansion screw is to use a hammer or tool to tighten the nut on the expansion bolt, causing the bolt's tail to expand. This generates friction and pressure within the installation hole, achieving a fixed effect.

How to Use Expansion Screws

The installation process of an expansion screw is simple and requires the following 3 steps:

Step 1: Drill the Hole

Select a drill bit that matches the diameter of the expansion screw sleeve and drill a hole at the marked location, ensuring the hole depth exceeds the length of the expansion screw slightly.

Step 2: Clean the Hole

Use a cleaning brush or air pump to remove dust from the hole.

Step 3: Insert the Expansion Screw

Insert the expansion screw into the hole, then tighten it with a screwdriver to achieve the required hold.
